Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder among children with sickle cell anaemia seen at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria

Background: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a disorder involving persistent and impaired levels of hyperactivity, impulsiveness lack attention associated with impairment in executive functioning affected children. Diagnosis ADHD the background sickle cell anaemia (SCA), haemoglobinopathy neurological complications may result significant child into adulthood, if not detected early. In view fact that can be managed diagnosed early prompted undertaking this study.
 Subjects Methods: Study was conducted at Paediatric Haematology Clinic University Benin Teaching Hospital, City. Parents children SCA were informed study consent obtained. Demographic characteristics recorded. Data collection instrument Parent Version National Institute for Children’s Health Quality (NICHQ) Vanderbilt Diagnostic Rating Scale (VADRS). Scoring done each participant using scoring instructions NICHQ VADRS following DSM-IV criteria.
 Results: A total 103 participated study. Sixty-two (60.2%) males while 41 (39.8%) females. Prevalence 15 (14.6%) predominantly inattentive sub-type being commonest. Children stroke are two times more likely to develop than those without (Fisher’s exact test = 0.269, 95% CI= 0.589 7.558, Odds Ratio=2.55). Age, sex socioeconomic status did significantly affect diagnosis ADHD.
 Conclusion: parentreported high, especially stroke.
